More energy saving light bulbs

June 1st, 2006 at 01:24 pm

I bought another pack of 4 of those 13 watt flourescent bulbs at BJs with a $4 instant rebate, making them less than $1.50 each. I installed two of them in the ceiling fan in my room. I only had one out of 4 of the 60 watt bulbs working in that light before. THis gives me twice as much light for less than twice the power. I used a third to replace a 60 watt bulb in the hallway between the kids rooms and the secondary bathroom. My Son at only 4 years old knows that we should use this light instead of turning on the bathroom light which uses 2 (I loosened 2 of the four) of those mini sun bulbs at 60 watts each.

We would not expect guests to leave the door open while using the potty, so I loosened half the bulbs to save energy from our guests' bathroom usage as well.
My little genius tells me that the hallway light is only one bulbs and the bathroom light uses two, so if he uses the hall light instead taht leaves more money for milk. I am very proud of him and his understanding of money concepts. Using a 13 watt bulb increases the savings even more. I have one more bulb to decide where I want to use it. The lights in the kids rooms are rarely used as they are sleeping when it is dark and playing when the sun brightens their rooms for free. The living room already has flourescents, and the itchen has the long flourescent tubes, leaving me pretty much the seldom used light in the laundry room as my only option.

I've almost got my house finished with these new bulbs. A couple more fixtures to do, but they are in areas that don't get turned on anyway, so they have slid to the bottom of the TO DO list.

I love energey saving light bulbs. Besides the savings, they also last longer so you don't have to replace them as often.

The fact that you got them so cheaply is just fantastic. Hopefully, I can score a deal like that some time in the future.

Keep on talking to your four year old about money matters as he grows! I don't think there has ever been a money issue in our home that our kids did not know about.

We started using the fluorescent screw-in bulbs about 13 years ago back when they were really not so compact. On our bathroom fixture they stuck out the sides! In our diningroom ceiling fixture we had to take away the shade in order to use the bulbs. Now that the bulbs are smaller, we don't have to put up with that. Plus, the bulbs cost a whole lot less now. I think our first bulbs cost.....(get ready to faint)......$26 each! It was not a money savings, I'm sure. Plus the color was funny: Kind of like cantelope

I remember those and cantelope is exactly the color!

That is so neat that your boy shares some of your thrift. Great deal on the bulbs. I put thrifty bulbs in our new apartment two years ago, all still going good. Small amounts of power saved add up over time. I bought an LED night light on sale to use in the bathroom. Says on the package it costs 25 cents a year for normal use. Might be 50 cents because mine stays on all the time. I've trained myself not to use the bigger bathroom lights unless I really need them.

I have those night lights too, a soft blue light. The one I had said it costs pennies for year, but like your it is on pretty much all day. Also like you I do not use the lights, at night I can see just fine thanks to the little blue circle of light.
